Calorie Restriction Improves Your Health And Longevity

July 16, 2009 by Trevor Watkinson · 4 Comments »»

I wanted to take the opportunity to share my excitement over the recent discovery I made of the Calorie Restriction Society which is based in North Carolina in the United States.

My random stumbling through the depths of the internet brought me to an article about this fantastic non-profit organization that teaches people how to improve their health and extend their lifespan through the adoption of a low-calorie, nutrient-dense diet.

The aims of the Calorie Restriction Society seemed so closely aligned with the goals I have with my own website and blog that it was only natural to want to learn more about what they teach and how their theories were formed.

My interest in the Calorie Restriction Society and in weight loss and health in general led me to Amazon.ca to look for any books I could find which had been published by people associated with the aforementioned organization.

Finding out that an organization like the Calorie Restriction Society existed was a fantastic moment for me.  My wife Lyann and I developed our own calorie restricted diet plan over time based on my knowledge of diet from my bodybuilding years.

Knowing that there were others out there who also independently came to the same conclusions about the benefits of a calorie restricted, yet nutrient-dense diet was like finding out I was not actually the last person on earth.

Major diet companies and those who get lured in by their marketing schemes are rarely receptive to the message of personal responsibility that I promote here on my website and blog.

The natural human reaction is to want to put the responsibility for success or failure on someone else’s shoulders so that if failure is imminent, they have someone other than themselves to blame.  How else could one say “I tried that diet, but it didn’t work for me” except they have an outside source on which to pin ultimate responsibility?

I was pleased to see that the Calorie Restriction Society believes in giving all of their information away for free while also offering it in book form for a fee.  This practice is in line with how I run my own company, offering my quick weight loss ebook for sale through my website for a small fee while also giving away all of my best ideas for free through my blog posts.

My excitement with my recent discovery of a group of people who share my beliefs led me to order three of their publications from Amazon.ca last week.  I am pleased to announce that I have those books in my possession now and that I plan on sharing summaries of each of the books, chapter by chapter as I progress through my reading.

This process stands to add a lot of value to the information I have already presented through my blog posts and seems like a perfect complement to the calorie-restricted 30-day food trials I conduct on myself in order to show people that effective weight loss without exercise is a function of how much you eat and that health is a function of what you eat.

The Calorie Restriction Books I Plan On Reading And Reviewing

I found three books on the topic of calorie restriction that seemed to line up perfectly with the examples I give here on my blog regarding how to achieve successful weight loss without exercise.  All three books support calorie counting in order to manage your weight.

All of my posts also support calorie counting as a means of controlling your weight.  There is no better way to lose weight or control your weight than by knowing how many calories you are consuming and then making intelligent food choices which allow you to eat a large volume of food while keeping your calorie intake low.

The following three books all support my weight loss and health knowledge.  They are:

Beyond the 120 Year Diet – How To Double Your Vital Years, by Roy Walford, M.D.

This groundbreaking book on the topic of calorie restriction was first published as “The 120 Year Diet” by Simon and Schuster in 1986. This book provides its readers with full details of a calorie restricted diet which promises the benefits of anti-aging effects, weight loss and improvements in both your general health and mental well-being.

The book comes with instructions on how to follow a calorie restricted diet properly and contains full menus and recipes that you can employ to reach your own health and weight loss goals.

Though I do not promote structured exercise as a way to achieve weight loss or general health, Dr. Walford’s book does also include advice on exercise and stretching for those who choose to employ such methods in their self-improvement, health and weight loss strategies.

This book is based largely on empirical evidence gathered over many years from Dr. Walford’s own laboratory at the UCLA School Of Medicine. This book serves as the basis for the practices and beliefs of the Calorie Restriction Society, which counts Dr. Walford’s own daughter Lisa among its members.

The Longevity Diet – Discover Calorie Restriction – The Only Proven Way To Slow The Aging Process And Maintain Peak Vitality, by Brian M. Delaney and Lisa Walford

This book by Brian M. Delaney, President of the Calorie Restriction Society and Lisa Walford, daughter of Roy Walford and coauthor of “The Anti-Aging Plan” can be considered a comprehensive follow-up to and sister publication to “Beyond The 120 Year Diet Plan.”

More of a hands-on publication, this book teaches the reader how to effectively employ the principles and practices of calorie restriction in the development of their own weight loss and health plans.

The information in the book is supported by years of studies on lab mice and other mammals which have reached the human equivalent of as much as 140 years of life while being subjected to a calorie restricted, nutrient dense diet.

Readers are taught to eat fewer calories and make more informed and careful decisions about which foods to actually include in their diet. Research has shown that following a calorie restricted and nutrient dense diet can dramatically reduce your chances of developing most major health disorders and diseases.

No matter what your personal development, weight loss or health goals are, The Longevity Diet can help you achieve success!

The Cr Way – Using The Secrets Of Calorie Restriction For A Longer, Healthier Life, by Paul McGlothin and Meredith Averill

Paul McGlothin and Meredith Averill have practiced calorie restriction for fourteen years and are both considered leaders in the Calorie Restriction Society. They have bundled their collective calorie restriction knowledge from their many years of practice into a very user-friendly book.

Filled with many useful recipes, meal ideas and health tips, this book will become an invaluable reference manual during your new efforts to follow a calorie restricted way of life.

This book includes a basic description of what calorie restriction actually means, a summary of benefits to your body and mind from following a calorie restricted diet, details of the dietary plan itself and an appendix of frequently asked questions.

This may be the most down to earth choice I made when picking my initial selections for educating myself about how others were living a calorie restricted lifestyle. I plan on saving it for last as it seems to be the least technical in nature and more focused on the benefits a calorie restricted diet provides for your health, weight and state of mind.

What I Hope To Gain From These Calorie Restriction Books

There are a number of benefits I expect to reap from reading through these three calorie restriction books and tying in some of the practices of the Calorie Restriction Society to my own calorie restricted diet plan.

Some of these benefits include:

  • A greater understanding of human metabolism
  • Increased knowledge of how refined and processed foods affect the human body
  • Greater effectiveness in teaching others how to formulate their own calorie restricted diet plans
  • New ideas for more of my personally-branded 30 day food trials

My own philosophy of learning has always been to look to those who have already achieved the kind of success I seek in life when I want to improve some aspect of my character or physique.

It has always been easy since gaining my faith in The Lord Jesus Christ to have someone to emulate when issues of character have come up. It has not been so easy up until this point to find like-minded people with whom I can share ideas about diet, weight loss and health.

Discovering the Calorie Restriction Society for me was kind of like when Steve Martin first finds the beat to music in the movie “The Jerk.” It was a great discovery and welcome development to find that there were others like myself who had independently found the benefits of eating less and eating more nutrient dense foods.

The SaveYourSweat.com diet and calorie restriction are a great compliment to each other. I look forward to sharing the information from the three Calorie Restriction Society related books that I have recently ordered.

Consider this just one more effort on my part to freely advise the portion of the population suffering under the weight of obesity on how they can exercise their own power and personal responsibility by making a few small decisions and changes in their lives that will have enormous positive consequences.

Thanks for the post. I have been a fan of calorie restriction for some time as I have been researching age extension. I have found exciting evidence that a large part of the benefit of calorie restriction is actually due to the low levels of insulin that your body produces when you restrict calories, priamrily sugar and carbohydrates. This is an intersting twist in that perhaps the most important part of calorie restriction is actually sugar and carb restriction. This is a valuable distinction, particularly for individuals who need to eat more calories daily, either because of an active lifestyle, or just being tall for example.
