How To Eat McDonald’s For 30 Days Without Getting Fat: Day 1

June 11, 2009 by Trevor Watkinson · 1 Comment »»

I am going to spend the next 30 days eating nothing but food from McDonald’s in order to show people how it is possible to eat nothing but McDonald’s food for 30 days without getting fat.

I really enjoyed taking the last month off from my posting schedule and my 30-day food trials.

It gave me time to find new passion for what I do here every day.

I have great excitement about making my way through the McDonald’s menu over the next 30 days while still managing to lose weight.

I already proved that it is possible to eat substandard food and still lose weight without exercising when I completed my 30 Day Chef Boyardee Weight Loss Diet and then endured my 30 Day Swanson Hungry Man TV Dinners Weight Loss Diet.

I plan to complete the same 30-day diet period with many different types of food in order to show the truth of what I preach here on my blog about successful weight loss without exercise.

You can read my post My Focus For 2009 if you want a long explanation of my reasons for completing each of my 30-day diets, but I will provide a shorter version here.

My reasons for conducting these 30 day diets are to prove that:

  1. You can achieve permanent weight loss without exercise.
  2. It is not what you eat, but the quantity of food you consume that makes you fat.
  3. The best way by far to lose weight or maintain your weight is by calorie counting.
  4. You can lose weight and stay slim without exercising, even when forced to eat the crappiest food you can find.

I will be proving these points this month by eating most of the burgers that McDonald’s offers, most McDonald’s breakfast menu items and some McDonald’s side dishes. I intend to stay away from McDonald’s desserts because they would take up my entire allowable calorie limit for any given day.

Rules I Will Follow While Eating Nothing But McDonald’s For 30 Days

The rules I am following during this 30-day period of eating nothing but McDonald’s food are listed below:

  1. I am only allowed to eat a maximum of 800 calories per day, just like I did during my Chef Boyardee food trial in January of this year.  I may be over or under this limit a little each day, but my average daily calorie intake will be close to 800 per day.
  2. I am not allowed to consume any calories from drinks, so I can drink only water or other zero-calorie beverages until this McDonald’s food trial is over.  This means I will be giving up coffee for the second time in my life.
  3. I will not be doing any exercise while eating nothing but McDonald’s food.  I never exercise anyway, which is why this website and blog are all about achieving permanent weight loss without exercise.
  4. I will continue to eat only once per day, totally disproving the idea that you have to eat smaller meals more often in order to burn fat effectively.
  5. I will not be adding any extra salt or ketchup to the McDonald’s french fries I eat.  The extra salt would make me retain water and the ketchup would add unwanted calories.
  6. I will be having dipping sauce with the Chicken McNuggets I eat and will be counting the calories from those sauces.
  7. I will be having dressing with any McDonald’s salads I eat and will be counting the calories from those dressings.

McDonald’s Canada Nutrition Calculator

Here is a link to the McDonald’s Canada Nutrition Calculator. I thought it would be nice to include a link to this tool so that those who were inspired to complete this 30 day trial along with me could make up their own 800 calorie meals from McDonald’s with relative ease.

Even if you decide not to spend 30 days eating only McDonald’s food like I will be doing, you can at least check and make sure that the calorie totals I report each day are correct.

What I Expect From Eating Nothing But McDonald’s For 30 Days

  • I am expecting to have some intestinal problems during the next 30 days.  I had some periods go by during previous 30 Day Substandard Weight Loss Diets where I would not go to the bathroom for a few days in a row.
  • I experienced this particular problem mostly during the time I ate nothing but Chef Boyardee canned pasta for 30 days.  I expect to have the same problem while eating nothing but McDonald’s food for 30 days because I equate the quality of McDonald’s food as about on par with Chef Boyardee.
  • It is actually surprising that McDonald’s does not currently have a lineup of canned products on the local grocery store shelves.  I am positive that McDonald’s in a can would be a great profit machine.
  • I expect to be a little lighter in the wallet once this month is over.  I have not investigated what the whole month will cost me or what the average cost per day will be.  I tend to just jump in with both feet.  However, I expect that I will have to spend about $5.00 per day in order to complete this food trial.
  • I should also end up being lighter on the scale when this month expires.  I lost 13.0 lbs during the month of January while eating Chef Boyardee products and maintaining an 800 calorie per day intake limit.
  • I am lighter now than I was at the beginning of the year, so the weight loss will not be quite as drastic.  Yet, I do expect to fall beneath my all-time lowest weight of 146.6 lbs which I achieved on March 25, 2009 while eating Swanson Hungry Man TV Dinners every day.

My Current Weight And Body Fat

  • My Current Weight: 156.4 lbs
  • My Current Body Fat: 22.1%

I am pleased to see that I will be starting this month of eating nothing but McDonald’s food at the same weight as when I began my 30-day period of eating nothing but Swanson Hungry Man TV Dinners.

I lost a total of 8.2 lbs during my Swanson Hungry Man TV Dinners Weight Loss Diet.  I accomplished that while eating an average of 850 calories per day, so I should see a little better result while eating only 800 calories per day worth of McDonald’s food.

My weight is usually right around the 150.0 lb mark, but had risen recently due to the last free day I celebrated with my wife Lyann.  I am pleased that this is the case because I do not want to go overboard with my weight loss efforts.

I have a lot of clothes that are already too big for me and do not need to compound the problem.  Starting at a weight of 156.4 lbs should give me enough of a buffer to stay above the 145.0 lb mark.

My Salter body fat percentage scale I will be using while eating McDonald’s for 30 days is not entirely accurate.  It uses electrical impedance to measure body fat and tends to give out a high reading.

However, I can still compare my beginning and ending readings for the month to find out my net percentage loss of body fat.  You will see from my beginning and ending photos that I do not actually carry around over 20.0% body fat.

I will be posting my beginning and ending photos on the last day of this diet, along with my weight loss and body fat percentage charts.

What McDonald’s Food I Ate Today

The McDonald’s food I chose to eat today was as follows:

  • Two Cheeseburgers
  • One Small Fries

Here is how my meal of McDonald’s food appeared on my plate tonight:

McDonald's Cheeseburgers And French Fries

The plate I used to hold my meal tonight is the same one I usually fill with fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meat when following my normal, healthy diet.

Even I was surprised at how little space my two McDonald’s cheeseburgers and one small order of McDonald’s fries took up on my plate.

I am used to seeing a mountain of food on my plate and also eating a two-cup serving of homemade vegetable soup along with my meal.

I was still not left feeling hungry despite the very small volume of food I ate today. Perhaps that is because this is just the first day of eating this way.

I noticed a few things about this food tonight:

  • The smell of this food filled my car instantly when I got in to drive home after leaving the restaurant.
  • The flavour of the french fries was immediately recognizable to me despite having been away from this type of food for years.
  • The one pickle that came on each of the cheeseburgers was really small.

My total calorie intake for the day consisted of:

  • Two Cheeseburgers – 600 calories
  • One Small Fries – 230 calories

This made for a total calorie intake of 830 calories today. I only drank water today, just as I stated I would at the beginning of this post.

Today felt like a great start in my efforts to show people how to eat McDonald’s for 30 days without getting fat.  I am looking forward to seeing the readings on my scale tomorrow morning.

One day down, twenty-nine more to go…
