30 Day Chef Boyardee Weight Loss Diet: Day 12

January 13, 2009 by Trevor Watkinson · No Comments »»

I wondered how long it would be before I received negative feedback and experienced the first occurrence of violent opposition to my 30 Day Chef Boyardee Weight Loss Diet.

It turned out that I did not have to wait as long as I thought I might.  I’m not even halfway through the diet and someone has already decided to comment on my venture in a less than a professional manner.

In addition to posting here on my blog, I make a habit of adding some of my blog information to the i-report section of CNN’s website.  I decided to post my first blog entry of this Chef Boyardee food trial series on i-report just yesterday.

Very shortly after sending my blog post 30 Day Chef Boyardee Weight Loss Diet: Day 1 to i-report, I got somewhat of a nasty and negative response.  It was obvious to me that the person who left the comment on my i-report never bothered to read all the way through the article I posted there.  Their response seemed to be mostly a quick gut-reaction to the title of the post.  Regardless, I thought it would be beneficial to repeat their response to my i-report here in its entirety.  They said the following (quoted verbatim):

This entire venture is idiotic. All of this to lose weight? Are you insane? Why don’t you just cut off a leg? That would lose weight rapidly. You would jeopardize your for this? Isn’t that a little counter productive? Let’s take on small element; vitamin K, how much does this diet contain? I’ll tell you, nothing. Do you know what vitamin k does for people? Look it up. Stay on these idiotic diets and see what it gets you. You’ll lose weight 100% of your weight because you’ll die of a blood disorder from lack of vitamin k alone.
You should try another idea to explore like how long you can do without typing on your computer and posting on the internet.

Wow.  You would think that I did something to personally wrong the individual who left that comment.  I’ll be the first to admit that I was not happy with what they had to say, but I quickly accepted that they were entitled to their opinion and thanked them for their comments.

While mildly picking apart all of the obvious grammatical errors that appear within the previous comment, let’s have a look at each statement individually.

  • This entire venture is idiotic: According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a moron is a stupid person, whereas an idiot is a very stupid person.  So, my detractor means to call me down to the lowest in terms of my intellectual capabilities.  If I were an idiot, I probably would not have taken the time to state very clearly at the beginning of this 30 Day Chef Boyardee Weight Loss Diet that I was well aware of the substandard level of nutrition I would be receiving.  I also would not have been intelligent enough to quit eating this product after 30 days as I said I intended to.  An idiot would continue eating this food regardless of the consequences.  This is clearly not my intention.
  • All of this to lose weight?: Again, if the person who left this comment had read my post, they would have realized that losing weight was not my primary goal for this diet or any subsequent trial I may undertake.  I already knew I would lose weight.  I already knew how to achieve weight loss by eating only healthy, expensive foods.  The idea is to show people that do not have the money to be able to eat fresh vegetables all the time that they can still lose weight even if they are forced due to economic circumstances to eat only foods that are considered bad for your overall health.  All that is required is a little self-control.
  • Are you insane?: Since scientists have conclusively proven that a person who is truly insane does not have the capacity (or motivation for that matter) to question whether or not they are insane, I would have to say that I am not.  I retain the ability to question my sanity and believe myself to be quite sane indeed.  Furthermore, calling me an idiot by stating that my entire venture is idiotic and then asking me if I am insane seems rather odd.  If you assumed that a person was an idiot, would you not also have to assume that they would be too stupid to know if they were insane?  What a strange question.
  • Why don’t you just cut off a leg?: Since the whole idea of each of my diets is to go through a 30 day period while enduring the same activity day after day, cutting off my legs has been ruled out completely.  I only have two, and I like them right where they are.
  • You would jeopardize your for this?  Isn’t that a little counter productive?: I could only guess that my critic meant to ask if I would jeopardize my health for this trial and to ask why I would do it when it seems counter-productive (yes, counter-productive is supposed to by hyphenated).  Yes, I would jeopardize my health to show people who are less fortunate than myself that they can still lose weight eating only the food they can reasonably afford to buy.  I do not consider that goal to be counter-productive.
  • Let’s take on small element; vitamin K, how much does this diet contain?: I’ll assume you meant one small element.  According to the nutritional labels on the Chef Boyardee canned pasta products I chose to eat during this food trial, there is no Vitamin K in my diet at the moment.  However, my food does contain between 2% to 15% of my recommended daily intake of Vitamin A, 2% of my recommended daily intake of Vitamin C, between 2% to 4% of my recommended daily intake of Calcium and between 6% to 15% of my recommended daily intake of Iron.
  • Do you know what vitamin k does for people?: Vitamin K helps the body transport calcium and is needed for proper bone formation and blood clotting.  Leafy green vegetables are the best source of vitamin K.  All newborn infants receive vitamin K to prevent deficiencies that sometimes develop in breast-fed infants.  I’d say that definition is good enough for most.
  • You’ll lose weight 100% of your weight because you’ll die of a blood disorder from lack of vitamin k alone: I wonder if my antagonist knows what Vitamin K does for people.  Though I suppose I would be in danger of bleeding profusely from any cuts I received while on this particular diet, especially if I were a hemophiliac, I doubt that I would die of a blood disorder.  A temporary lack of Vitamin K is not sufficient to make me develop any kind of blood disorder.  A blood disorder suggests a problem on a genetic level.  Vitamin deficiency is not a blood disorder and is not the result of poor genetics.

That about covers all the comments from the kind individual who shared their opinion about my trial on i-report.  Well, all except for the last comment where they suggested that I see how long I can go without posting anything else.  I tried really hard, but failed miserably.  I just had to post this article today.

The comment I received is typical of a critic.  Rather than try to understand what others are trying to accomplish, they ridicule and tear down the ideas of others in order to justify their own inaction.  Critics like the person who commented on my article generally never strike out on their own in any unexplored direction because of fear.  If you could not hear the fear in the comment they left me, then I encourage you to scroll back and read it again.

I learned long ago not to let the speeches of critics stop me from achieving my goals.  Don’t fall victim to the critics who tell you that you’re crazy and that your plans and dreams will never work out.  Never, ever, ever give up on your dreams.  You can pretty much be guaranteed to never make another mistake in your life if you always do the opposite of what the majority of other people are doing.

Here are my current stats:

Weight and Body Fat

My Salter body fat scale showed me weighing in at 155.0 lbs today, making for a net loss of 6.2 lbs since the beginning of my 30 Day Chef Boyardee Weight Loss Diet.  My body fat percentage reading was 21.5%, which means a 1.5% drop in body fat since I got started.

I am becoming progressively less worried about how much weight I will lose during this particular diet.  I originally thought that because of my rapid weight loss at the beginning of the diet, I might end up in the low 130 lb range near the end.  I no longer expect that to happen.  I think I’ll be lucky to get to the low 140 lb range.

Having dieted a lot in the past, I found that my body had a shutoff point when it came to shedding pounds.  This number used to be higher, but I have lost some of the mass I used to have as a bodybuilder and I think that is what makes for the lower shutoff point in the present.

Rather than see this sticking point as a bad thing, I see it positively because it lets me know that there is nothing else I can do to lighten the load on my frame or make it easier for my heart and lungs to get me where I need to go.  When I reach my weight loss shutoff point, I am carrying the least possible amount of baggage around with me.  I feel my best and look my best for my wife.  That’s all that matters to me now.

New Job Hunt

I’ll be looking for another job to supplement my income with soon.  My current employer has to abide by a matrix that tells them how many hours they are allowed to use based on sales volume and customer traffic coming through the door each day.

Since the holiday season, my hours have been cut back by half along with some of the other staff.  Though I really am enjoying my work outside our home, I am going to have to find something that provides for us a little better.

I am not sure if this is the greatest time for such a development because I am still uncertain what the days ahead hold in store for me in terms of overall health and mental clarity.  I hope that things stay as they are now.  I feel very alert and light on my feet.  I feel confident enough to tackle any mental challenge that may come my way.

It is odd that people come down on Chef Boyardee and other products so hard without experiencing a diet such as I am conducting.  The food I am eating has not served to dull my cognitive abilities in any way.  So, if any employer in the Campbellton, New Brunswick area is looking for a smart, witty, reliable and innovative person to join their team, I am making myself available.  Please contact me at your earliest convenience, using the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of the page.

What Chef Boyardee Products I Ate Today

The products I chose to eat today were one 418 gram can of Chef Boyardee Spaghetti and Meatballs and one 425 gram can of Chef Boyardee Four Cheese Ravioli.  My total calorie intake for today was only 720 calories.  I know that total is a little below the 800 calories I said I would have each day, but it is as close as I could come if I wanted to match up the products I have remaining without exceeding 800 calories at all.

The food did not seem quite so disgusting today.  I enjoyed the four cheese ravioli, but the spaghetti still grosses me out a bit.  Actually, the spaghetti is good, but the meatballs make me cringe.  They don’t seem like regular meat when you bite into them.  I much prefer the smaller, ground up meat that comes in the other products.

I guess it is just not knowing what part of an animal the meat came from that gets to me.  It is easier to keep this thought out of my mind when I do not have to bite directly through a “meatball” that is a little over half an inch thick.

On the plus side, today was a work day.  That made it easy for me to wait until nearly 2:00 p.m. before cracking open my first delicious can.  I had supper at 7:00 p.m. today.  That seems to be the optimal time to eat because it neatly splits the time between lunch and bedtime.  Going any more than five or six hours between meals is tough right now.

Summary

With twelve days of my 30 Day Chef Boyardee Weight Loss Diet over now, it is much easier to see the progress I am making toward my goal each and every day.  I have only had to add extra spice to one or two of my meals to give myself a little boost in motivation.  I think I will avoid this practice for the rest of the diet because I feel it violates the rules.  I know it doesn’t add extra calories, but it just does not feel right to me.

I am sure that I have not seen the last of any critics that may pop up and try to stop me or discourage me.  I honestly don’t care how many people tell me that I am crazy or stupid.  People thought Noah was stupid for building an ark in the middle of dry land and look how that turned out for him.  People called the Wright brothers stupid and crazy until they flew at Kitty Hawk.

Call me crazy and stupid if you like.  It just lets me know that I am doing the right thing.
